Due to increased competition between the insurance companies there have been some significant changes in the Mortgage Protection market.

Cost of protection - The cost of these plans has been reducing in many cases and you may be paying more each month than you have to.
Defined Critical Illnesses - A lot of work has been going on at the ABI (Association of British Insurers) and as a result, over the last 5 years, the number of Critical Illnesses covered on a typical plan, has increased from an average of 42 to 65. There are plans today that will cover between 80 and 88 Total Defined Critical Illnesses.
Severity Cover - Companies have to be more creative in their product design. As a result, some accidents and illnesses that were not covered previously now are. There are plans that will now pay out a percentage of the cover determined by the severity of the illness, or even for broken limbs.

If you already have a Life / Critical illness policy in place, it should be noted that the number of Critical illnesses contained in your plan, applies to the date you took out your contract.

If they have increased the number of illnesses that they now cover, you are not protected for these.
